Our Story
Dr. Kirby and Tara Anthony met at church in Norfolk, VA while he was serving in the U.S.Navy. While volunteering together, they became friends, followed up with a year of dating. They became engaged, were married in 1998 and began a life journey together that neither of them could have imagined.
While serving in the military Kirby sustained several injuries requiring extensive surgery and rehabilitation. He was later discharged, but still holds a deep sense of pride for his military roots as a retired, disabled US Navy veteran. (#GoNavy). His academic journey includes a BA in Theology, and a MA in Urban Ministry with a concentration in Multicultural Studies. He also earned a PhD in Leadership from Beulah Heights University.
Tara attended and graduated from Norfolk State University. (#GoSpartans). Upon graduating, her love for educating young minds motivated her to pursue a career in teaching. She began teaching in Norfolk Public Schools where she excelled, before relocating to Charlotte in 2010 with her family. She is now a teacher and department chair in the Cabarrus County Schools System.
Queen City Discipleship is the convergence of multiple streams in Pastor Kirby’s ministry. For the last 20 years he has served the Body of Christ in various leadership roles including youth leader, itinerant speaker, assistant pastor, church planter and lead pastor. His passion in this season includes leading and shepherding those in the Charlotte community, and helping them to become authentic, biblical disciples of Jesus. As such, the vision to plant Queen City Discipleship settled in Kirby and Tara's hearts, and it was launched in January 2025.
Kirby and Tara have three young adult children: Jerome, Kayla and Kahlil.
